Day 19: The Essentialist Way to Use Your Energy Wisely

Do you use your energy wisely, or do you throw it at way too many things and attempt to do a million things at a time?

I have definitely waivered between focused energy on just a few key things, and trying to ‘do it all’.

The thing is, one of these ways is far more effective than the other and while I’m sure you know which one, you probably still practice the other more.

That’s why I love the simple diagram and explanation I share in this video, given by Greg McKeown in his book Essentialism.

It powerfully, yet simply shows how to apply energy for the best possible results.

I definitely recommend you check out Greg’s Book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less on Amazon

Day 18: How to Integrate All of You Into Everything You Do

What does a paper family and your past, present and future have to with each other?

Well when I put it all together in a coaching session the other day, I realized quite a lot.

If you want to turn up as all of you, as a whole being, you need to integrate:

  • your past self – memories and experiences, as well as;
  • your future self – the visions and goals you have for yourself, and also;
  • present day you.

Yet there are times when you need to revisit your past to learn lessons in order to grow and become a better version of you.

Sometimes – in fact quite often, you need to focus on where you’re heading, and visualise the person you are becoming.

And most important, is being present in the moment and being all of you.

I explain more in this video and for the first time since school, make a paper family to better depict what the heck I’m going on about!

Day 17: How to Declutter and Receive More Abundance

I realised since moving into our new house (9 weeks ago), I’ve not decluttered my wardrobe and now it’s finally time.

I’m in the right head space and energy to clear it, make space, reorganise, Marie Kondo my clothes again and while doing this, find some abundance!

Say whaaaat? I’m talking money like coins and notes, gift vouchers, keys, jewellery, lotto tickets etc.

It’s amazing what you can find when you search.

Not only do you feel lighter for having rid yourself of the burden of stuff you either don’t need, don’t like or don’t use, you also feel richer for finding abundance in your pockets and drawers.

Hope you enjoy this video, which is day 17 of 29 and now my friends…I have work to do!

Day 16: How to Stop Being a Meaning Making Machine

Humans are great at being meaning making machines – and that’s a not a good thing by the way!

I credit my recent experience at Landmark Forum to this video topic because it totally opened my mind to how I create meaning out of events.

I learned that you and I are meaning making machines, simply put, any time an event occurs, rather than just viewing it as an event that happened, we attach all sorts of meaning to it.

There’s a real danger in doing that and telling ourselves stories about what this means.

We start to take this on as our identity. It then affects our behaviour, our beliefs and our attitudes.

I share examples of making meaning out of everything in this video and why you and I need to stop doing this now!

Day 15: How to Start Forming Great Habits and Track Them

I’m all about creating great habits and rituals.

Yet throughout my life I’ve had periods of doing this super well and consistently and in other areas more sporadically.

I read my friend James Clear Atomic Habits book last year (NYTimes Bestseller for great reason) where he talks about the power of creating small daily habits that leads to big leaps and changes.

How I use habit stacking to start my morning off right

Atomic Habits by James Clear

This year I’ve been using his Clear Habits Journal to track my habits every single day and it’s really surprised me – plus it’s quite addictive.

In just 21 days we can form a habit but I believe losing bad habits takes longer and the trick is to replace them with the good ones you want to keep.

I shared more about this and the ha it tracker in my Day 15 video.

Day 14: Why it is so Important to Take Time Out

Why is it so important to create more freedom in business and adventure in life?

For those of you have read my Suitcase Entrepreneur book that is the tagline and my philosophy for life that I live by.

Taking time out during your work day to just be, relax, read, paint, get out in nature, or do something completely unrelated to work has been PROVEN to have profound benefits.

It increases your creativity, focus and energy among many other benefits.

Ironically, last year I put too much focus on work, and while I did use my triathlon training to get out and about all over the country in amazing places, what I lacked was pure time out.

Time out to just chill, relax, recharge or adventure and it showed after a full year, I nearly burned out!

Never again. Back to living and breathing what I preach and KNOW has profound benefits on your life and gives you more freedom.

Day 14 is shot at Patuna Chasm, New Zealand where Ruby, Joni and I hiked and ‘swam’ in the river for 3 hours of pure joy and great conversation!

You don’t need to go on a hike to achieve more balance, creativity and joy in your life, little moments of freedom and free time everyday, add up to whole new you and way of living life.

Day 13: Become a Leading Learner not an Expert

I’m a BIG fan of showing up as a Leading Learner versus being labeled as an expert.

So what’s the difference and why can it help you immensely to become a Leading Learner?

An expert is someone with huge depth of knowledge and understanding of a niche topic, that they’ve studied and applied for years, if not decades.

It takes a long time to get this status and is quite the achievement.

A Leading Learner however is you and me.

Someone who LOVES learning and as they learn and apply, they share the results and teach others.

In that way you’re just a few steps ahead of everyone else, but you’re willing to share what you know as you learn it so others can use this valuable information to leap frog to where you are.

It means you don’t have to worry about knowing all the answers, or feeling like a fraud or imposter.

You just learn, grow, apply, implement, teach – rinse and repeat.

There’s a wise saying that we teach what we most need to learn.

I’ve gone deep into all sorts of areas and learned amazing skills over the years by showing up as a student first, teacher second.

It’s served me well to be an expert in several areas now – because I never stopped learning or upskilling.

In this video I share why it’s so important in this day and age of getting paid to be YOU and making sure you remain relevant in the future of work.

Day 12: Where Can You Invest in Yourself

This year I made a pact with myself to invest up to $25,000 in me.

My personal growth, business growth, relationship growth – several areas of my life that I wanted to grow in.

It all started from looking into investing in some high level masterminds that had that price tag.

Then I stepped back and thought about what else could I invest that would help me grow and expand, for that amount of money.

For a start that amount of money in US$ is a deposit on a house! Plus there’s a bunch of ways in which I could spend and invest it that would get me amazing results.

This sparked a whole lot awesome adventures looking into events, conferences, workshops, retreats and courses that would be worthwhile to invest in.

I know every time I have invested in myself, the return on that investment has been so well worth it, yet I’ve not done this for a while, so 2020 is my year.

I speak to some of the things I’ve invested in, in this video.

Now I’d love to know where you’ve been holding back, playing small or not believing you’re worthy of having in the comments.

This is important. Growth happens at the edges when you push, challenge and learn.

Day 11: Weed Out Your Negative Thoughts to Make Way for the Positive

Did you know we humans have 60,000 thoughts a day. A day!

What’s more, research shows that most of those are negative thoughts.

In his book ‘The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari’, Robin Sharma refers to negative thoughts as weeds that are growing so fast they’re taking over your mind.

I’ve definitely been experiencing more and more of that recently, and then I realised I’d not been doing a good job of getting in my mind and pulling out all the weeds, as fast as they come up.

As a result I was allowing these weeds (negative thoughts) to dominate my mind, versus beautiful, positive and abundant thoughts (flowers) that could blossom.

The mind is a place to be nurtured and designed by you.

The more we clean up our garden so to speak, and remove all those weeds, the more we can fill our mind with the thoughts and visions for our best possible life.

We also need to carefully guard our mind and make sure we control the negative thoughts (weeds) so they get removed as quickly as possible, to make way for the reality we want.

This is reinforced by this excellent video interview with Dr Joe Dipenza on why we get stuck in these negative, recurring patterns and thoughts.

It’s a must watch and only 13 minutes and will give you many ah-ha moments.

If you want to change your life it starts with changing your thoughts, and Joe recommends meditation as the first step to all of this.

I’m on a mission this year, it’s one of my goals in fact, to deepen my practice and understanding of meditation.

I’m that determined to regain control of my mind and fill it with the vision I have for my life and work, so that it becomes my new reality.

Day 10: How to Choose the Most Productive Workspace for you

Is there such a thing as the most productive workspace for you?

Heck yeah there is. First off you need to ask yourself a few questions to figure it out.

Do you prefer to work from home, an office, a coworking space or a cafe?

Where are you actually most effective?

Where you do your best work from and why that is?

I’ve long been a fan of working from trains, planes, airports and cafes and coworking spaces.

There’s something about the buzz and energy of having people around that allows me to actually focus and be super productive.

Yet when I’m doing podcast interviews or videos that’s not an ideal set up.

So that’s when a dedicated office or working from home is best.

In this video I share the pros and cons of both and also what things you need to consider to get your best work done and work in the right place for you!
