My 29 Day Live Video Challenge in 2020

I was stark awake at 2am with a brilliant idea to end my procrastination and get back into creating videos for my YouTube Channel community.

Why I don’t do a daily live video in February to get me over the ‘hump’ of not producing anything, despite having the best intentions to do so.

You see my YouTube Channel has been consistently growing, getting thousands of views a month and even earning me a small income from ad revenue each month.

All of this without me uploading a video since late September 2019!

According to YouTube, I joined on 31 July 2009 and have 778,888 views!

When I was the Suitcase Entrepreneur I published a video weekly, and it felt doable despite traveling the world full-time.

That’s because I had plenty to share, in new locations, and I’d often batch all my videos by hiring a videographer in cities like London and Berlin to get 10 or so done in one day.

But ironically since being back in New Zealand, even with my little video studio we created in a shed, I simply did not get back into the same routine as I have had for my weekly podcast since 2012.

How this video challenge came to life

When I get really frustrated about not doing something I keep saying I want to do, I get to a point where I’m so fed up with myself, I take massive action.

Which led me to this 2am wake up call four days ago, where this 28 Day Live Video Challenge for myself, came to light.

I wrote up my thoughts in an evernote file as my mind would not let the idea drop and I started scheming on all sorts of ideas for videos – yet the rest of me just wanted to get back to sleep.

When I checked my note in the morning I still loved the idea. Then I checked the calendar and realise it was a leap year so it had to be a 29 Day Challenge instead – no sweat….eek!

Why not turn up live every day of February starting 1st of February turn up live on video – basically all of February (didn’t know it was a leap year either so one extra day in there!).

Here’s the 29 Day Video Challenge Overview

I got excited at 29 days of live video instantly shared across YouTube and Facebook YouTube, where I teach, share and chart my own month of learning from courses I bought and am going through in February.

This includes course topics of:

  • Business Mastery
  • Search Engine Optimisation
  • Copywriting
  • Facebook Ads
  • SEO
  • Fletcher Method
  • Email Marketing Acceleration
  • Six Figure Blogging
  • Network Marketing
  • Gorgeous Funnels

As well as for me personally – both mindset and growth

  • Money bootcamp
  • Elegant Excellence Mastermind
  • The Art of Development Coaching

Yep I know that seems like overkill, and some I won’t probably touch in February.

However this is a month I’ve put aside lots of time towards becoming even more of a Leading Learner!

I’ll go live each day at the same time where possible 11:11 am New Zealand time, which gives me time to do the learning, summarise and share.

It also creates a consistency have it for me and gets me past my excuse of ‘needing a studio to film’ .

Instead I’ll just go live where I am with my iPhone, mic and a selfie stick or stand, plus the Lume Cube light I can stick on a window or laptop or even my phone.

And it will definitely create engagement and increase my following and resonance on those platforms. Who knows, perhaps one video will actually go viral…or I’ll win Lotto or both!

It also gives me plenty of great reasons to share daily and talk about not only the courses I’ve invested in, but also the books I’m reading and tools I love.

I’ll also have great reason to be updating and optimizing my YouTube Channel, website and optins so that I am confident of my call to action in every video to grow my email list and community.

Plus I will tie it in with my survey results so that I’m really speaking to what people need and asked for – you’ve already given me the content ideas.

Finally it works towards creating a potential info product around digital marketing and understanding how to better promote yourself because those are all the things that I will be in mastering and levelling up in.

This will be real.

I mean really real. It’s live right so I’m not going to be able to do anything other than turn up, in whatever state I’m in, to share.

I want this to be personal, authentic and straight up honest.

Some days will be hard, others will be fun, others might get emotional, who knows. That’s the adventure behind doing a live challenge.

It starts today, 1st of February in New Zealand and I’ll be live streaming to my YouTube channel – so make sure you subscribe here por favor.

Here’s the first video!

As well as Facebook live by using a live-streaming ‘simulcast’ app called Castr.

8 Ways To Use IGTV For Your Business and Brand

I’m a big fan of testing new technology, particularly new innovations like IGTV, that are going to make an impact in our everyday lives.

So when Instagram announced IGTV I knew I couldn’t ignore it.

They are essentially rivalling YouTube, and what is amazing and scary at the same time is that Instagram now has 1 billion users, since starting in 2010.

Compare that with YouTube that has 1.9 billion users, but started in 2005.

What the heck is IGTV?

It stands for Instagram TV.

If you haven’t yet seen it in action, you can now create your own channel through the Instagram app or watch via a dedicated IGTV app or your PC/ or laptop.

You can start posting vertical videos, yes native vertical videos, right away.

That make so much sense given everything we do on mobile is in portrait/ vertical format – apps we use, messages we post, texts we receive, podcasts we listen to, and books we read – all in vertical mode which is how our smartphones work.

And we are addicted to our smartphones!

According to a blog post on BiznessApps for 2018:

1. As of August 2017, there are over 3.5 billion unique mobile internet users. Source: Statista

2. Users spend on average 69% of their media time on smartphones. Source: comScore

3. Mobile devices will drive 80% of global internet usage. Source: Zenith

4. 50% of the time individuals spend on digital media is on mobile apps. Source: Comscore

Ahhhh that’s nuts!

With this in mind I have an inkling that Instagram – AKA Facebook since they now own it, and their move to create IGTV, is a very smart one.

How can you use IGTV effectively

It’s very easy to use, and videos don’t have to be as ‘polished’ as they’ve become on YouTube for many influencers, content creators and brands, but you can make them look less raw than Instagram stories.

Here is my first IGTV attempt from the Beach of Baleal yesterday, introducing myself and sharing why I love the Freedom that Portugal has.

And this one from today, from my living room in my house in Atouguia de Baleia, with 5 Fun Facts about me (and the hope you will share one about yourself in the comments so I can learn more about you!).

Like any form of social media you need to put strategic thought behind what you are doing.

IGTV may, or may not be the right platform for you, but it’s definitely worth trying if you already produce content on your blog, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, or podcast, OR if you’ve really not embraced any other platform yet.

You just record them on your phone, and can use a video editor like Quik, to make them look a bit better or add in other footage and music, for example, then upload them to IGTV direct from your phone.

A few fun facts:

  • If you have a large following you get up to one hour upload length, but for us mere mortals it’s 10 minutes – which in my mind, is frankly long enough.
  • You can add multiple links in the description to drive traffic to your website! This is huge, and something I didn’t do in my first two videos…oops!
  • If you click those links above to my videos, you will see you can open them up on a PC or laptop too, even if you’re not on Instagram.

I really like this last point, as it means more people can find out about you, your work and what you stand for, without being limited to having to be on Instagram.

I must admit I personally like this tool as I love documenting and sharing on the go, but don’t always have wifi, especially when you’re traveling, so being able to capture videos on the spot, but upload them later, is liberating.

Sometimes the inspiration strikes and you just want to share some wisdom, insights, your innermost thoughts, some motivation or an epiphany. Or perhaps your latest dance moves!

I say this because as I surfed through IGTV popular I was frankly amazed at the international uptake of this tool – Russia, India, Brazil ..and of course Will Smith (who recently started vlogging on YouTube) with hundreds of thousands or millions of views already on their IGTV videos.

Many of these were dancing or music videos, or simply people having fun lip-syncing to their fave tunes, something I definitely feel like busting out!

I highly recommend you focus on the following with IGTV:

  1. Always provide value – insight, tips, strategy or wisdom – with a personal touch. Give, give, give.
  2. If you don’t feel in the mood or ready for 1. then be entertaining – bring joy, humour and happiness into peoples’ lives.
  3. Create awareness around what you actually do, introduce yourself and tell people who you serve and what your why is.
  4. Showcase your work in a fun way or have others do it for you- I’ve seen video testimonials already and feedback with customers in an video interview style from Kimra Luna who’s in launch mode.
  5. Repurpose your work – James Wedmore is using it to share his podcast directly, others are taking their horizontal videos and editing or simply putting into a vertical background.
  6. Stand out – grab your instagram stories and roll them into one interesting video with music using the Quick app or Vue.
  7. Treat it like a Facebook live and post your video to your Facebook page or group after for more interaction.
  8. Always include a CTA (call to action) back to your website, or products, or a piece of content that they can learn further from.

I hope that’s given you some insights into how use this new tool effectively.

If you shy away from social media completely, know that it’s here to stay – and has been since 2004 when Facebook started, but that you don’t have to be the face of your business to use it effectively.

Audio, product demonstrations, customer reviews…these are just some of the ways to be active and engaged without it being all about you.

If you’re an influencer, personal brand, coach, consultant, advisor….oh YES you know you need to get on this now, or continue to stick with using the tool you’re getting the best results from already, but always think about how you can improve on what you’re doing.

The world doesn’t need more crap content, but it does need more of your gifts. So get them out there!
